Title: Rare Antique Bronze Standing Figure of a Multi-armed Female Deity.
Khmer 'Prei Khmeng' Style.
Overview: A superb Khmer Figure of a Female Deity, probably that of 'Uma',
beautifully executed in traditional 'Prei Khmeng' style of the Khmer Angkor Wat
Era, elegantly modeled with intricate detail, measuring 16.0 inches (40.64cm).
Description She stands in 'Samabhanga' with her bare feet firmly planted on a
small square plinth, with her arms raised holding attributes in each hand,
while displaying the gesture of instruction, the 'Vitarka' mudra. The figure
displays typical indian movement of the torso with supple modeling, standing
with a sway to the right hip, or the 'tribhanga' posture. She is gracefully
poised with a slender profile, and a well-defined naked upper body, partially
covered in a long stylized sarong, worn high on the hips, with the navel
visible, secured by a decorative belt with central rosette, tied at the front
in a loop, and complimented by an ornate central panel draped down and finished
in a decorative design to the garments hem. XXX The face appears indigenous
to Khmer with incised almond-shaped eyes, connected eyebrows, broad nose, wide
mouth, and elongated pierced earlobes. Her long hair with its cluster of
looped-braids is piled into a coiffure known as a 'jatamukuta' in which the
complex binding and long looping of the braids gives the appearance of
richness, of which is typical of Prei Khmeng (635-700) style sculptures, as are
her lithe, slightly muscled figure, youthful face, and serene interspective
gaze.Remarks:The bronze figure is an early surviving example of statuary
recovered from northern Cambodia. The piece reflects characteristics linked to
the Prei Khmeng period, and demonstrates the regional style of an era who's art
and culture was once under the rule of the Khmer Empire for several centuries,
and is distinguished here by the exquisite craftsmanship and charming
naturalism in which the figure possesses. The bronze remains in solid condition
with some minor casting flaws, pitting, and minor surface degradation as would
be expected given the conditions in which it was maintained.
