Image Details:x An exquisite 12th century Khmer Sandstone Temple Relief
Element, beautifully modeled in traditional 'Angkorian' style, depicting the
Deity figure 'Shiva' in human form, seated on a sheltered platform, flanked by
female Devatas (Apsaras), kneeling in attendants to both sides. The deity is
shown kneeling in a relaxed attitude, holding a club in the right hand. He is
unclothed above the waist adorned in mere jeweled ornamentation, wearing a
short stylized Sampot, folded over a plain belt secured around his hips. He
wears an elaborate inter-connected Angkorian style crown, surmounted by a
conical-shaped headdress, ornamented in vertical rows of tightly braided hair,
bound by a band with floral ornamentation. His indigenous face appears serene,
with arched eyebrows set over almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, thick lips, and
elongated earlobes frame his face.
The devatas are beautifully modeled, depicted as supernatural females living
in the celestial court, sent to earth by the gods as a sensuous celestial nymph
to dance and seduce the hearts of demon ascetics. They are presented both
youthful and elegant, seated poise in gesture, shown unclothed above the waist
with deep bosoms adorned in mere jeweled ornamentation, possessing a slim waist
and fairly large hips, dressed in traditional celestial clothes wearing a
stylized sampot folded over a plain belt secured around their hips. Apsaras
faces are characterized by a serene expression, almond-shaped eyes, arched
eyebrows, a prominent nose, well-shaped mouth with insipid smile, and elongated
earlobes adorned with triangular earring pendants. Their woven braided hair

originally hand-carved in bas relief, from a solid block of dense sandstone

penetrating the surface of the stone in variations of hues and colours, from
extended exposure to the natural elements in which it was maintained.
