ANTIQUE DETROIT BRASS BRONZE MICHIGAN CENTRAL STATION DEPOT SOUVENIR
COLLECTIBLE
GENERIC DESCRIPTION HOW I ACQUIRED BRASS FROM THE 1912 M.C.R.R. STATION :
This is a generic description for all of the antique brass and bronze pieces
that I am offering for sell that were all originally used in the manufacturing
of the very ornate light fixtures and chandeliers from Detroit's last remaining
1912 Historic Michigan Central Train Station }. There have been quite a few
questions regarding how these pieces were acquired so here is the direct short
version. 31 years ago in 1990 I had purchased the salvage rites for the
removal of the last remaining artifacts from the then owner of the building.
Prior to conducting any transactions with the owner the building had sat vacant
for a short while. During the transition of the vacant property from the
previous private owner to the new owner during 1989 to 1990 the street thieves
had broken into the building and began stealing most of all of the solid brass
and bronze light fixtures for scrap metal value. Because they created such a
swarm of noticeable activity late at night into the early morning it drew the
attention of the 3rd Police Precinct around the corner on West Vernor. Many of
the thieves were arrested and the truck loads of brass lighting were
confiscated as evidence and placed in the { Detroit Police Mt. Elliot Impound
Yard }. The police had contacted the owner and he was informed to make
arrangements to come and retrieve his property. I had gone to the impound yard
with him and seen several large 50 gallon steel drums full of all sorts of
brass and bronze pieces as well as some complete light fixtures. Because the 3
main chandeliers in the main lobby were so huge the thieves actually dismantled
them on the floor of the main lobby after they had crawled up in between the
ceiling and cut the huge brass chains supporting them sending them crashing to
the marble floor, thus also breaking them into pieces and destroying them. What
remained intact was removed by hand to make it easier for them to load and
carry out of the back of the building. The owner allowed me to purchase as much
as I wanted to because he was taking the barrels to the nearest scrap yard on
Mt. Elliot Road for scrap metal value. I had acquired many pieces and began
selling them as souvenirs back in 1990 through to 2001. I had placed some
select pieces away and now I have brought them out of storage to place them on
. Each piece has been cleaned and semi polished because when obtained the
original finish was a very dark filthy brown from years of neglect and a thick
film covered the ornate raised relief patterns. That's pretty much the story of
how I acquired these individual complete pieces. The following below gives a
brief description of the condition and size.
NOTE CUSTOMER REQUEST : During the last 2 years on eBay & privately I have
sold every piece of brass & bronze that I had been listing. Due to customer
request I have once again begun listing what pieces I have remaining available.
If you like what you see consider buying it because I do sell locally in
Detroit and all of the surrounding Metropolitan & Suburban Area.
ITEM DESCRIPTION : Hello and thank you for expressing an interest in my
auction. I am offering for your consideration the following. This auction is
for - - - { #1 Large Floral Acanthus Leaf Piece } - - - of ornate cast brass
historic artifact that was originally attached to the Entry Hallway main
chandeliers of { Detroit's Historic 1912 Michigan Central Train Station } .
These pieces are extremely scarce and are not readily available for sell in any
common antique shop. Each piece I offer is "Very Attractive" in it's own way
by style, design, appearance, condition, etc. This one is a larger piece unlike
those I have sold and offered in the past. It has a floral over lapping
Acanthus leaf pattern with a slight curve which is how it was made and is not
bent due to damaged, as seen in the posted picture of the light fixture it came
from. The bottom of the chandelier is rounded, thus the piece has a slight
bow. As with many of my other items from the old station these are in limited
quantity and once they sell I have no more available. Of the many pieces of
brass I have going back 31 years ago, these are "truly the last remaining
pieces I have to offer". A very limited small handful of others will be
sporadically listed as I find them in my storage.
ITEM CONDITION : The over all condition for this solid cast brass leaf section
panel is " Exceptional Condition " for being 109 years old with no damage. This
one is the - { Large Acanthus Leaf Pattern } - which is what most all of the
floral pattern in the old station was designed with. You will see in the
pictures posted there are 2 that are black & white from 1912. They show the two
chandeliers hanging in the Entry Hallway where this panel was inserted around
the perimeter of the lower main body. The station only had 2 chandeliers in
this style & size and both were destroyed by street thieves. The measurements
are as follows - - 16 inches in length, 8 -1/4 inches wide at the very top, 1
inch wide at the very bottom, the raised ornate pattern varies from 1/8 th of
an inch to 1/4 inch in depth, and is cast 1/4 inch thick, the weight is roughly
6 to 9 pounds - perfect weight to display anywhere. This piece was originally
manufactured with a very slight bow and lays about 80% flat, which is flat
enough to hang on a wall or place on a table, desk, mantle, etc for display.
Please - " view all pictures closely ". Remember to view the last 2 pictures
posted in black & white, which shows where this piece was originally installed
on the chandelier. Thank you.
Remember this auction has the "Best Offer" option, don't hesitate to use it if
you have an interest that's why it's there.
REGARDING PICTURES : When viewing the posted pictures they may seem a little
grainy or fuzzy & over or under exposed. This is because I am using an older
model Sony camera that still uses floppy disks.
