Title: Authentic Khmer Sandstone Figure of a Male Deity, Angkor 'Banteay Srei'
Style. Cambodia 10th C.
Description: A superb 10th century hand-carved Khmer Sandstone Male Deity
Figure, probably that of 'Shiva', stylistically and iconographically executed
in traditional 'Banteay Srei' style, from Khmer mythology. The figure is
presented in its unrepaired condition as found, elegantly modelled from a solid
block of sandstone. As with images from this period, the ornamentation reflects
a perfect mastery of sculpting and fluidity. Facial features of the statue
retain characteristics of the previous Koh Ker style, but appear more delicate,
and reddish sandstone was used. The carving measures 34.50 inches (87.63cm) in
height, including the custom fabricated removable steel stand.
The deity is masterfully modeled in realistic human form, standing in a strong
frontal posture on a small square plinth retaining the original wedge support
at the bottom. He stands in 'Samabhanga' with both arms broken, wearing a short
stylized sampot worn high on the hips and hung low at the waist, with the navel
visible, secured by a plain belt, fashioned with neatly incised pocket folds on
the left thigh, and complimented by an ornate dagger on the right. Typical of
Banteay Srei style male figures, his garment is ornamented with a butterfly
knot at the back.
XXX The face appears indigenous, typically Khmer, with a serene expression,
incised almond-shaped eyes, connected eyebrows above a well-shaped broad nose,
wide mouth, mustache, and elongated earlobes. The hair is tightly braided in
vertical rows, drawn onto the top of the head to form a bulb-shaped Chignon,
held in place by a jeweled band, and topped with a floral lotus. XXXThe
base has a v-shaped wedge which fits into the stand and is visible as displayed.
XXX Originally hand chiseled from a reddish sandstone, the fragmented portion
is an exquisite example, unaltered, and professional mounted. The statue
reveals a well weathered and worn surface, with a naturally aged patina of
molted variations of hues and colour throughout. The surface showing minor
degradation, and clear evidence of selective erosion, that developes after
extensive exposure to the elements over time.
NOTE: SOLD AS PRESENTED WITH CUSTOM REMOVABLE STEEL STAND.
Data Observation: Excellent Condition, with the exception of small surface
abrasions. Severed arms and limbs are typically found in images of this type,
having multiple breaks from the burial environment in which they were
unearthed, which does not detract from the beauty of the piece in anyway, as
displayed. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor
imperfections of the item.
