Title: Extremely Rare Bronze Naga Protected Buddha, Mon Dvaravati. Northern
Thailand. 10th C.
Description: A superb Bronze Dvaravati Naga-Buddha image, from a temple
precinct in northern Thailand, shows the Buddha meditating in a loose Lotus
position under the seven-headed Naga, with the necks of the naga distinctly
separated.
Duely noting - the only other known example in existance similar to this
piece can be viewed in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore.
The Buddha sits in the 'Virasana' pose, meditating on three graduated coils
of the serpent king 'Muccalinda', protected by the hooded canopy of its
seven-headed cobra. Both hands overlap one another in the 'Dhyana' mudra, the
attainment of spiritual perfection, gesture. Buddhas profile is slender,
wearing a long monastic robe covering the left shoulders, leaving the right
shoulder and breast uncovered. Buddha's oval face is distinctly Dvaravati,
portraying a serene downcast expression with wide smiling lips, ridged eyebrows
connect in the middle, set above almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, incised
mouth, and elongated earlobes drape short of his shoulders. The head is covered
in large snail-shell hair curls, whorled right, surmounted by a conical-shaped
Ushnisha' only. The cobra's canopy is distinctly separated into seven
individual heads, finely incised with overlapping scales, as is the hooded
reverse intricately carved in conjoined scales of the snakes body, surrounding
a centre 'Wheel of life' medallion, incised in the shape of a flower. The
serpents wavering tail is intricately carved in relief, forming the shape of
the base, graduating to a rectangular base.
The sculpture has a dry, un-altered surface, with a superb dark brown, red,
and blue-jean blue patina, covered in wonderful mottled variations. The core
within the bronze consist of a tempered sandy-clay, with embebbed rice husk
patterns. Extremely heavy piece for its size.
Data Observation: Excellent condition, with minor degradation of the surface,
with dings, dents, and casting flaws being a natural part of the statue's
patina.
